Have you ever watched people with no previous training dancing or ice-skating on those reality television programmes and thought to yourself: “Wish I could do that…!”?
Well, now you can try to imitate the professional performers who execute those moves with such apparent ease! The Mullingar Arts Centre have several exciting new initiatives for adults and children, ready to be launched after the summer break, in September 2012.
Street Dance
Ballroom dancing is not the only area which has seen interest increase over the last few years. Street dance might have been a form of the art unfamiliar to many, before the advent of Got To Dance and Diversity. This exciting and contemporary dance form is immediately identifiable by its energetic, acrobatic and athletic moves. Street Dance classes will also start in September, on Tuesdays, from 4.00pm to 5.00pm for children under 10, and from 5.00pm to 6.00pm for children over 10.
Disco and tap-dancing
The revival of the fashion, films and music of the 70s has been accompanied by a renewed interest in the disco moves which were so much part of that era. Riverdance and its various spin-offs – including the Michael Flatley phenomenon – have also sparked new interest in the moves of tap-dancing. Apollo School of Dance has been founded in order to fill this gap. Classes will also take place on Tuesdays, from 6.00pm – 7.00pm and from 7.00pm – 8.00pm.
Academies for the Performing Arts
Several years ago the Youth Academy for the Performing Arts was founded at the Mullingar Arts Centre, in order to fulfil the creative aspirations of the teenagers in the area. Incorporating the disciplines of Musical Theatre, Drama, Dance and Samba drumming, it was an unprecedented success, resulting in the opening of a Junior Academy for the Performing Arts, catering for children between the ages of seven and twelve.
As a spin-off from these initiatives, and again responding to a need amongst children from the age of five up, the Academy of Rock Music was established. Instruction is given in various instruments: keyboards, drums, lead guitar and bass guitar.
Kinder Academy for the Performing Arts
Our aspiring performers are getting younger, so from September 2012 we proudly present the Kinder Academy for the Performing Arts, featuring tuition in the disciplines of Musical Theatre as well as Speech and Drama. Created specifically for children between the ages of three and six, it will perfectly prepare them for the Junior Academy. This means that there will be a structured programme of performing arts to nurture the talents of our children right the way through from three to eighteen. The Kinder Academy will operate on Monday afternoons from 3.00pm – 4.00pm and 4.00pm – 5.00pm.
Adult drama initiatives
There are also exciting opportunities opening up in the area of adult drama, with the founding of two new groups. On Tuesday, 11 September, auditions will be held for a production to be staged by a group specially designed as a recreational activity for unemployed people. A little later in the year, another group will be launched specifically aimed at the active retired. Both of the new groups will launch with a full-scale production, which will be presented at the Mullingar Arts Centre. Please watch the press for further information and details of auditions.
