The Mullingar Arts Centre was proud to once again open its doors to the National Festival of the School Drama Society, which took place from Thursday, April 23rd to Thursday, April 30th, 2026. Over the course of the week, our venue was transformed into a vibrant national stage, welcoming young performers, teachers, and families from across Ireland.

From our perspective, it was a privilege to host such a dynamic and inspiring event. The standard of performance throughout the festival was exceptional, with each group bringing energy, creativity, and professionalism to the stage. Our theatre spaces were alive each day with set builds, lighting adjustments, and performances that captivated audiences and celebrated the very best of youth drama.

While the festival itself is a national undertaking, its success in Mullingar is deeply rooted in local support. Under the leadership and dedication of Sean McCoy, the All-Ireland finals of An Cumann Scoildrámaíochta have been hosted annually at Mullingar Arts Centre for over 20 years. 

Equally important was the dedication of our own team here at the Mullingar Arts Centre. From front-of-house staff welcoming guests, to our technical crew managing lighting, sound, and stage transitions, every member of our staff played a key role. Opening our theatre to dozens of groups required careful planning and long hours, as sets were assembled and dismantled, cues were tested, and each performance was prepared with care and professionalism. It was a true team effort, and one we are incredibly proud of.

We were also delighted to see such strong involvement from the local community. Students and volunteers from nearby schools gave their time and energy to assist throughout the week, contributing to the warm and welcoming atmosphere that visitors experienced. Their enthusiasm reflected the strong connection between the Arts Centre and the wider Mullingar community.

Throughout the festival, we welcomed visitors from counties across Ireland, including Clare, Galway, Kerry, Meath, Armagh, Donegal, Laois, Louth, Derry, Carlow, Dublin, Mayo, Monaghan, Antrim, Tipperary, and Tyrone. Their presence reinforced Mullingar’s role as a cultural meeting point, bringing together diverse communities through a shared love of the performing arts. The buzz in the building each day—families gathering, performers preparing backstage, and audiences filling the theatre—created a memorable and uplifting environment for all involved.

Hosting the National Festival of the School Drama Society is always a highlight in our calendar. At the Mullingar Arts Centre, we are proud to provide a space where young talent can shine, and where communities can come together through the arts. We look forward to continuing to support and host this wonderful festival in the years ahead.
