Young talent shines in “Hadestown: Teen Edition” at Mullingar Arts Centre

The stage of Mullingar Arts Centre came alive from April 7 to 11 as the Mullingar Student Players presented an ambitious and visually striking production of Hadestown: Teen Edition, drawing strong local interest and showcasing the depth of young theatrical talent in the region.

The production marked a significant achievement for the group, with local reports noting that it is rare for youth companies to secure the rights to stage the internationally acclaimed musical. According to the Westmeath Topic, the Mullingar troupe is among only a small number of Irish groups to take on the “jaw-dropping” show, underlining both the scale of the undertaking and the confidence placed in the performers.

Blending contemporary folk music with elements of Greek mythology, Hadestown tells the intertwined love stories of Orpheus and Eurydice, and Hades and Persephone. As highlighted by the Westmeath Examiner, the narrative reimagines these ancient tales through a modern lens, exploring themes of love, sacrifice and power in a world that mirrors contemporary social concerns.

Directed at a youth cast but tackling mature and complex material, the production was described as both “uplifting” and “intelligent,” with its rich score and emotional storytelling forming the backbone of the performance. The Examiner noted that the musical is widely regarded as one of the most talked-about works in modern theatre, often compared in cultural impact to landmark productions such as Chicago and Wicked.

Central performances came from Sean McDonnell as Orpheus and Tara Larkin as Eurydice, supported by a strong ensemble cast portraying figures such as Hades, Persephone and the Fates. The show’s structure, guided by the narrator Hermes, allowed the young performers to demonstrate both vocal ability and dramatic range.

The Mullingar Arts Centre production team also placed a strong emphasis on staging and atmosphere. Audiences were transported to an industrialised underworld, with set design evoking a cavernous, subterranean landscape intended to immerse viewers fully in the world of Hadestown.

Beyond the spectacle, the show reflected the ongoing mission of the Mullingar Student Players to provide meaningful artistic opportunities for young people. With more than two decades of youth productions behind them, the group has built a reputation for tackling challenging material while nurturing emerging talent.

Promotional material for the production promised “an unforgettable jazz score, captivating storytelling and many tearful moments,” a promise that appears to have resonated with audiences over the five-night run.

As the curtain fell on April 11, Hadestown: Teen Edition left a lasting impression locally, reinforcing Mullingar’s growing reputation as a hub for high-quality youth theatre and demonstrating that ambitious, large-scale productions are well within reach of its next generation of performers.
